Henderson - Wood Mount
Wood-mount Henderson bagpipes are among my favorites. I played the bagpipe above for years in the Clan MacFarlane Pipe Band in St. Catharines. It was not until 2000 that I passed it on to another Grade 1 piper. Under-stated in appearance, make no mistake. These old horns are outstanding. You'll find them with ivory, casein, or catalin rings and bushings, but it all makes no difference. The real deal.
This wood-mount Henderson above held a special surprise. Once the finish was removed, the wood was found to be ebony. The casein rings and bushings provide an important clue as to the date of manufacture. WWI or shortly thereafter.
Another very nice set (right) from about the same era, this time flat-combed. These tend not to attract much attention however are excellent instruments.
These aren't very good pictures however sometimes you take what you get. This is a flat-combed Henderson with chalice tops and button mounts. The picture on the far left compares a similar bagpipe made by Lawrie. Interesting and I can't tell you anything more about it.
This Henderson comes with the original bill of sale. Take note of the wood. The Henderson business was in complete disarray in 1966 and obviously using wood that they would not have used previously. Note how the profiles had changed by this time.
The wood-mount set above is from the late 1930's or 1940's with catalin rings and bushings.
