I encountered this bagpipe early on in my travels.  It had been burned and was split and was headed toward the bin.  I confess that I really didn't know what I was doing, but I knew I didn't want to see it thrown away.  I learned a few things, including not to muck about with something I knew nothing of.  If you look closely, you can see how I "whipped" the bass mid section.  The wood was so incredibly dry I was afraid it would split worse.
