McLennan, G.S.

George Stewart McLennan’s story as a champion piper and composer is published in many places. The story of his life deserves a deep read. http://www.gsmclennan.co.uk/

In 1918 he became seriously ill and returned to his home to Aberdeen in 1919. Sometime shortly thereafter he set up a bagpipe making business in Aberdeen. He died in 1929.

I’m not at all certain how I acquired pictures of this note and bagpipes. The story goes that G.S. was friends with James Scott Skinner and performed with him to raise money for the war effort. James had a friend in Aberdeen who agreed to let G.S. use his wood turning lathes to make a set of bagpipes. It is not known where G.S. acquired those skills, however the bagpipe he made is pictured below. He took this bagpipe with him when sent to France and it was badly damaged when run over by the wheel of a wagon. A corporal piper in the band whipped (bound) the pipes and G.S. continued to play them until 1918 when he was discharged from the army.

I do not have further pictures of McLennan bagpipes.

I am happy to include G.S. McLennan within this Museum. The family recently reached out to me with additional pictures and information, which I will be publishing in the coming weeks. Please visit their outstanding memorial to G.S. McLennan at this web address http://gsmclennan.co.uk/
