Metzler & Company

Valentine Metzler set up shop in London in 1788, opened a music warehouse around 1800, and worked in woodwinds under his own name until 1816. Valentine’s son, George Richard, joined him in 1816 as Metzler & Son. George was born in London in 1797, making him 19 at the time. He died in 1867, age 70. Valentine died in 1833 and the company name changed to Metzler & Company. Those who have researched the company and its musical instruments have concluded that they were dealers and not manufacturers.

These pictures came to me courtesy of a piper in Australia. The bagpipe is stamped Metzler & Company, London on every ferrule and on the chanter. The page above establishes a connection between Thomas Glen and George Metzler. The chanter style and details appear to confirm that this was the work of Thomas Glen.
