Rudall Carte & Co.

Many years ago at a Hamilton Branch Meeting (PPBSO) I encountered a bagpipe that left me wanting to know more. (at the top right) It was said to have been made by Rudall Carte in the early 1950’s. The bagpipe was silver lined tuning chambers and hemp stops. The turning was perfect and immediately my mind went to Henry Starck. As it turned out, the bagpipe was made by Les Cowell following the closure of Starck’s business in 1955. This bagpipe was one of only a few such sets in silver and ivory made by Cowell for Rudall Carte. I regret not taking more and better pictures. Interestingly, another set turned up in Ontario several years later and I am able to show pictures of that bagpipe here as well.

Lastly, another set surfaced in the US in 2021. The owner provided excellent pictures of the instrument (the six pictures at the bottom) that clearly shows the hallmarks, the silver lined stocks, and the silver hemp stop. Just exquisite and I struggle to place a value on this instrument.

In 2016 news surfaced of another silver and ivory Rudall Carte bagpipe. This set was in very difficult condition as can be seen above. A restoration was performed (I’m not sure who did it) and the results can be seen below.
